Definition: Refers to wood planks cut radially from a log's outside towards its center. Quarter-sawn timbers have relatively straight and evenly-spaced grains that resist warping as the wood ages. Quarter-sawn spruce planks have long been considered the ideal material for use in guitar soundboards. The ends of quarter-sawn planks should have vertical or near-vertical grain patterns which may be apparent around a guitar's soundhole.
Pronunciation: quar·ter·sawn
