Price Paid: $1800 USD
Description: Built 1998-w/single,single,humbuck config. 5way switch, Alder Body, Maple neck w/ Madagascar Rose. fretboard 1.650 nut width, 6100 jumbo frets, Tusq nut, Kluson tuners, Blk. Charcaol Pearl w/ whammy bar
Tone:
Comments: open tone with great natural harmonics clear individual strings tones w/o muddiness, pick-ups are dead quiet, with plenty of volume, leans toward the bright side with smooth mids, but could have a touch more bloom on the bottom end with .009 strings- probably would benifit from a heavier gauge set. Volume and tone pots are quiet. Pick-ups are extremely versitile, yeilding many useful sounds- complete spectrum from mellow jazz tones to shred, to Texas spank. Excellent Blues Ax. Just ok in a transistor amp, but shines through a good tube unit. Doesn't mush up with heavy effects.
Quality:
Comments: Guitar came out of the box in excellent set-up shape. Fit and finish was very good. Neck-frets-bodypaint were 1st rate. The sealer used on neck is a nice touch-light config. w/ no friction to thumb. All final touches on guitar were thorough and thoughtful. This is a custom built ax and sounds and plays its heritage.
Overall:
Pros: John Suhr is a master craftsman and his guitars reflect his skill and attention to detail. He answers his own phone and is not a phantom when you need to ask him a question. His instruments are the guitars you've waited for all your life. They aren't cheap and are not for the bargain shopper. But if you've always wanted a vintage sound with a rock solid, day to day, practicality- you'd be well served to play his instruments before making the plunge. Suhr makes instruments for working players who ask alot of their guitars and demand TONE and ease of play, as well as durability- not easily available from all quarters today- at any price.
Cons: Not available in every market. Not inexpensive.
