Squier Affinity Strat
[Submit a Review]

Price Paid: $140 USD
Description: 3 pickups, single coil, rosewood fingerboard, some wood for the body, standard strat feel, generic tuners
Tone:
Comments: I haven't been playing for that long so I work off of a simple Crate GX-15R practice amp. I use a DOD grunge cause the single coil pickup on this thing just doesn't cut it. You really need some sorta effects to get a clear sound out of it.
Quality:
Comments: The feel is really great. The action on the neck is nice (really slim and quick). It's not laminated, never liked that sorta stuff and it DOES have the feel of a strat. It didn't have any wood flaws. The hardware feels a little cheap...doesn't have quite the precision of a real strat. However, the tone/volume knobs feel even better than a real strat.
Overall:
Pros: at 140 bucks you just can't beat it in terms of price. I figure it'll work out pretty good for people looking for a second guitar. The feel alone really makes it out-do the other guitars out there.
Cons: sounds's not the greatest, you might want to splurge for the humbucker.

Price Paid: $215 USD
Description: Three single coils, rosewood fretboard, oversized late 60s headstock, classic ""Fender style"" vibrato.
Tone:
Comments: The very WORST thing about this guitar is the tone. The pickups produce way too much high end for my taste. Restringing it with 10 gauge strings seemed to help a bit.
Quality:
Comments: This guitar gets points off for the poor quality of the pickups. Other than that, everything about this guitar is great. Nice feel, the action is very low. No problems with fretbuzz. In short a nice guitar with substandard pickups.
Overall:
Pros: The neck seems to have a ""satin gloss"" to it which is nice. The body is also 5mm thinner than a Fender Stratocaster. It was worth the money I payed for it which included a professional setup. The guitar is ""British Racing Green"" which is the coolest color I've seen on an Affinity series strat. A word of warning: The color is so dark green, unless you are in direct sunlight, it will appear almost black.
Cons: Did I mention I hated the pickups?

Price Paid: $140 USD
Description: Ply wood, unfinished rosewood fretboard, generic tuners, strat shape, plastic-like finish
Tone:
Comments: I've played this through numorous amps and the the sound just doesn't resonate. The tone is shallow and weak, on all different settings. As soon as a note is struck it dies out prematurely.
Quality:
Comments: Firstly, I had to take it in for protruding frets. Its really light. the action is okay, but there is quite a bit of fret buzz. Also, tuning this guitar is a real task, the intonation seems to worsen as the frets descend.
Overall:
Pros: The price, You get exactly what you pay for. I have a guitar that I bought on the street for 20 bucks
Cons: the tone is extremely weak the fret board feels like sandpaper. I would not recommend this guitar. I am a die-hard strat fan and this misrepresentation of a stratocaster is quite lacking and inadequate. It will end up costing you more in the long run, and cause you a lot of grief if you are a beginner (like I was), and are quite clueless about guitars. Word to the wise, steer clear of this guitar, the price may be very enticing, but as I said you get exactly what you pay for, this guitar does not hold up at all.
