BB gave the name "Lucille" to an early guitar (there have been many Lucilles over the years) when he almost lost the instrument in a fire. While on a gig in 1949, two men started fighting and knocked over the barrel of burning kerosene. Everyone rushed for the exits, including B.B. Once outside, King realized that he had forgotten his guitar inside. He went back inside the blazing building and rescued the guitar. When he found out the two men were fighting over a woman named Lucille, B.B. named the guitar after her, to remind himself never to do anything like that again.
