Grunge. Most certainly, that's what the 1990s will be remembered for. Coming into the decade, the airwaves were being dominated by "glam metal" - bands like Whitesnake, Skid Row, and Poison (while these bands generally wrote pretty interesting guitar parts, many rightfully questioned the overall quality of the music). Thus, grunge was born, a raw, angry response to what was happening in the music world.
Grunge music, although not universally loved, is certainly a great genre of music for the beginner guitarist. Most songs contained only a few chords and were relatively simple, since many of the musicians writing and playing the music weren't exactly experts to begin with. Have fun with these tabs.
