The Bottom Line
If you're looking for new ideas to practice, this DVD could provide a good starting point. Without additional resources, however, Rock Guitar Rhythm Chops won't provide much new insight.
Pros
- good demonstration of unusual chord voicings
- could provide inspiration for more study
Cons
- not much info on strumming technique
- not much information on each topic covered
Description
- Nick Nolan of GIT demonstrates how to incorporate new ideas and chords into your rhythm playing
- Includes info on chord voicings, muting, pedal tones, sixteenth note strumming, & chord arpeggiation
- Runs about 45 minutes, and attempts to cover a lot of ground, so little time is spent on each topic
- DVD extras include a "Getting to Know Your Amplifier", a Steve Morse performance clip, and more
Guide Review - Rock Guitar Rhythm Chops DVD
The best guitar instructional materials provide new ideas for musicians struggling for inspiration. This entry in the Beyond Basics DVD series seeks to inspire those with experience in rock guitar playing, by illustrating slightly more advanced techniques associated with rhythm guitar. Instructor Nick Nolan does a commendable job of providing an overview of more advanced chord structures, and giving us a taste of muting technique and sixteenth note strumming. Because of the broad focus of the DVD, and the relatively short running length, this DVD serves mainly to allow the viewer to get ideas about what to work on, at which point they'd need to explore the topic more fully on their own. As a basis for inspiration, this DVD could succeed.
