Joe Satriani Interview

Kim Jones speaks with the guitarist after a G3 Show

By Dan Cross, About.com

Kim: Is there any guitarist out there that you haven't recorded with yet that you would like to record with?

Joe Oh (laughs) about a million! Guitarists, I think, secretly would just about love to play with everybody else because it's what we love to do. When you get a chance to play with other people it's like a dream come true because as you grow up, learning how to play, you generally play with other records. You put on the records of all the greatest players and you just play them all. For me, it knows no boundaries. I'd love to record with Jeff Beck and Billy Joe from Green Day. It wouldn't really matter to me. I like players from all different styles and I just think that if they're really nailing it, then they must be interesting people that would be fun to play with.

Kim: Do you have a "closet" song? By that, I mean a song that you like, but you're kind of embarrassed to admit?

Joe Boy, you know, I'm never embarrassed to admit anything. (laughs) I've probably already said things that I should regret. A closet song..... You know, the other night the guys walked in on me and I was just about to take a shower after the show. Steve and Yngwie were wondering where I went because I left the stage a little early. I was standing there in my boxer shorts when they walked in and, of course, I was wearing my Sponge Bob boxers. That created quite a stir and they've been bugging me quite a bit. They want me to walk on stage like that. So I supposed I'm kind of stuck on the Sponge Bob song. (laughs)

Kim: (laughs) Hey ... Sponge Bob is cool! My three year old loves him. Last question for you ... are you growing your hair out? I ask because every picture I've seen of you lately has you wearing that hat.

Joe No. You know, there's part of it that I could grow. (laughs) I didn't start the tour wearing a hat. I've been shaving my head since '96 and I'm just sort of used to it. When we were playing in Denver, the night we were filming, it was kind of cool out and I just stuck this hat on. I just didn't take it off when we hit the stage and I kind of liked it. You know, there have been tours where I wore a hat all of the time. It kind of helps you feel somewhat more inward when you walk on stage and less influenced by outside forces, which sometimes can make me play better. So I started getting somewhat superstitious about it. But one day I'll just get lazy and stop shaving my head. I don't think I'll be able to grow a full head of hair anymore because of the genes that I inherited from my relatives.

Kim: We all have those crosses to bear. For me, it's being five foot two and knowing that I'll never get any taller, especially since I'm long past any growth spurts.

Joe (laughs) That's all right, don't worry. I'm only five seven and a half.

Kim: You look a lot taller.

Joe Yeah, the stage does that to people. You know, both Steve and Yngwie are like six foot or six foot one and I feel that every night. (laughs)

Kim: I feel you there! My husband is six foot three and that makes us like Mutt and Jeff. Joe, this has been great. The show was awesome and talking to you has been a real treat. If you're ever back in this area, we'll definitely be here to see you.

Joe Thank you very much Kim.
