YouTube: Curtis Mayfield's "We Got To Have Peace"
Monday September 29, 2008
Thumbing through my DVD collection this week, I came across one of my favorite live music DVDs, The Old Grey Whistle Test Vol. 1. It had been a while since I watched it, so I had the opportunity to be blown away all over again by Curtis Mayfield performing "We Got To Have Peace". Luckily, I found the same clip of Curtis Mayfield playing "We Got To Have Peace" on YouTube. This is a must watch video. For all of you out there in bands, pay attention to:
- the overall band volume. Notice how quiet everyone is... they're all listening to each other, making sure they're not too loud in the mix. The effect of this restraint is really evident.
- the minimalism. No one here is playing too much, and as a result, you can clearly hear all the different instruments in the band.
- the groove. Despite it's quiet nature, this song is undeniably funky. This is an incredible rhythm section.

Takes me back to the 70’s ! Never thought we’d still be listening to it now. I was more a progressive rock and blues man in those days, but my flatmate was a soul man – thanks to him I got into funk and eventually jazz fusion – thanks John
Yeah, also admire funk a lot.
Made a website to show the essence of it: http://www.acoustic-funk.com
Great explanation,
Cheers
I WANNA PLAY THE BONGOS LIKE THAT—-MAYBE I SHOULD START PRACTICING!
