How cool of an idea is this? Indie band Deerhoof has put the sheet music for their new song "Fresh Born" on their web site. The wrinkle? This is a song fans haven't heard yet, so despite the sheet music, no one really knows how their version of the song sounds. Deerhoof is encouraging you to download the sheet music, record yourself performing the song, and post it to the web. You can add a link to your version of "Fresh Born" from the Deerhoof web site. Eventually, they'll post their own version of the song.

What an awesome idea, letting other people interpret the words and music without putting any preconceptions in their heads. This reminds me of a piece I read somewhere about a record producer who didn’t let an artist (Nena?) hear Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” before recording it. I always think its great to hear what an artist can do with a song they’ve never heard someone else sing.
What a refreshing angle for sure. I feel a trend a-comin’! Thanks for the tid on Nena’s story with Joni’s tune - see, even the comments on this may take on a more intelligent hue! Even as our dear Lennon put it, “there’s nothing you do that can’t be done” (as in, has probably already been done), all the same, very refreshing
